You might say, I entered Stubz with a midlife crisis in tow. My partner passed away two weeks prior, my calf-length locs were chopped after 33 years, and my grey hair crowned my worn face like an unabashed halo of struggle. I was cordially greeted by Keren and Jermaine who offered me a seat, a beverage and warm genuine conversation. Keren got to work colouring my hair in a rich auburn brown, clipped the sharpest ladies fade before turning me over to Jermaine who freehanded the hair tattoo whose message guides this leg of my life’s journey.
As this transformation was occurring each distracted me from my sadness and apprehension by introducing me to each and every customer who entered. Everyone had a testimony—one man had been getting his hair cut by Jermaine for over a decade, and another was getting married in the morning. Yet another ***ve me his phone to swipe left through the most stunning array of successive hair colours I have ever seen! Pointing to Keren, he said, “She did that!” She sure did. As another testament to the skills at work at Stubz this man brought his partner for their first cut. As someone in the midst of loss, it was a pleasure to be part of such easy, friendly, community-building efforts. The barber shop as a space of refuge for Black folks is well-known and might be taken for granted by those who sit in the chair often. It was nice in my time of need and transformation to feel a sense of welcome and belonging. Thank you, Keren and Jermaine!
I have received many compliments, from friends, family and colleagues. I was even stopped by a stranger in the grocery store!
I must give thanks to my students whose care and concern led me to Stubz with their recommendation. As I embark on new journeys, I am grateful for the “new” look Stubz was instrumental in constructing. Many, Many Thanks!… – show
